Area guide to Orpington

Orpington is a busy and vibrant suburban town located in the London Borough of Bromley in South East London, and has evolved from a small village to become a thriving cosmopolitan area. Surrounded by agricultural land, there are numerous parks within the area, yet it also boasts excellent commuter links. Direct fast trains from Orpington to London Bridge take approximately 16 minutes, and there is also easy access to the M25 and the A20.

Families with young children are drawn to Orpington due to the excellent choice of schools. Two of the top schools in the country, St Olave’s Grammar School and Newstead Wood School, are situated locally. Both schools select their students on the basis of their performance in a highly competitive entrance examination. There are also a number of schools that are rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, and properties within their catchment areas are highly sought after.

The main shopping centre and the high street offer a diverse range of outlets, and there is also a leisure centre with indoor swimming facilities. A new cinema is due to be built in 2014, to replace the old cinema which closed in 1982. There’s no shortage of restaurant choices in Orpington, which offers something to suit every taste. Local favourites are bright and modern Chinese restaurant Xian and Fiesta Mexicana, which offers an authentic blend of Mexican and Cuban flavours. With its homely British cooking, real ales and cosy fire, local pub The Queen’s Head is another popular choice.

While the schools in Orpington are an important factor for families, the area is also home to some beautiful parks. Goddington Park features 64 hectares of grass and trees, with an abundance of sports fields for all to enjoy. Orpington is also known for the picturesque and family friendly Priory Gardens, where there is a church, museum, children’s play area and beautiful rose garden.

There’s an array of architecture on offer in Orpington, from Victorian houses to New Builds, and a mix of bungalows and flats. The highly sought after area of Knoll is in high demand with families, as is the small, select residential area of Chelsfield Park. With such a diverse selection of properties available, it’s no wonder the area attracts a wide range of people looking to purchase a property. Whether you’re a professional, investor or a family, you’ll find your ideal home in Orpington.
