Area guide to Beckenham

Located in South East London and once the home of celebrated children’s author Enid Blyton, Beckenham is now a thriving cosmopolitan town located in the London Borough of Bromley. While there are still traditional, grand houses, the area is very much considered a ‘London suburbia’.

Beckenham is a favoured location for both young families and those commuting into London, with the majority of home buyers moving to the area for the reputable schools. Some of the best respected schools include Langley Boys & Girls Secondary School, Balgowan Primary School and Clare House Primary School.

Some of the most popular and family-friendly parks and areas in Beckenham include Park Langley, Kelsey Park and Beckenham Place Park, the latter being the largest green space in the borough. The park covers an impressive 96 hectares and includes large areas of ancient woodland, ideal for family walks. There’s also a great selection of sports clubs in the area, including Langley and Beckenham Leisure Centre’s.

Beckenham High Street is a vibrant and busy place, a popular destination for local residents. There’s a fabulous mix of boutique clothing shops, restaurants and delicatessens, as well as upmarket chains and family-run independent stores. Fine dining restaurant La Racasse comes highly recommended, while Bridge Bar provides animated nightlife and is the go-to place for young professionals.

Beckenham is served by many railway stations, with direct fast trains from Beckenham Junction to London Victoria taking as little as 21 minutes. There is also easy access for road travel into central London, via the A2. The abundance of transport links for both rail and road means the area is an ideal business location.

Beckenham has a wide range of architecture, and although the majority of houses were built in the 1930’s there is also a mixture of period and new builds from the 1960’s to 2000.

Alan de Maid covers the BR3 and SE20 postcodes within the Beckenham area.
